Desolation Jones: Made In England

Jones is a broken husk of an ex-MI6 agent who has been banished to Los Angeles (where ex-intel agents are apparently imprisoned). He shies away from the sun, is frail, pale and gaunt-looking. We don’t know if Jones was a good or bad agent, but we do know that alcoholism got the better of him. When it became clear that he couldn’t cut it, he was forced to take something called “The Desolation Test” – a human chemical experiment of which he was the only survivor. Free to move about L.A., Jones takes jobs within the exiled intelligence community.

“Made In England” is Warren Ellis at his character-driven, bad-attitude-flag-waving best. If you like stories about pheromone-spewing temptresses, girls who build exploding robot snakes and a detective hired to find a stolen canister of Hitler’s private porn, then Desolation Jones is the comic for you. I know it is for me.

The art is by J.H. “Promethea” Williams and it is AMAZING. The whole book is beautifully drawn, alternating between pen-and-ink and watercolor.
