Here is my first impressions on Quantum Games PS3 exclusive – Heavy Rain
I avoided all the chatter about Heavy Rain before it came out. I’m probably about half way through the game (I’m guessing it will take about 8-10 hours to complete) and it is like playing a movie. My wife hung out while I played and would watch a lot of the time and was entertained, she doesn’t like violence so she would look away from time to time. But Heavy Rain reminds me of how Hitchcock used tension and character motivation to give the audience a bond with the actor on screen. Heavy Rain does the same thing, I started to feel for some of the four characters you play as throughout the game.
One of the concerns I had about the game was if it would be stand up to multiple playthroughs. My answer to that was answered pretty quickly, yes I really DO want to play through the game another time because of some of the choices I chose (or didn’t choose). I did read one person say just play through Heavy Rain like you are watching a movie. Whatever actions you do (good/bad) while playing, don’t go back to “correct” them by loading up a previous save file. I would agree. I did some HORRID things while playing the game that I wish I could take back. But I kept playing the game.
My wife said Heavy Rain isn’t a violent game, it is an emotionally disturbing game, and I agree. The quick-time button presses during the on-screen action is very tense and sometimes I find myself yelling at the TV screen because I missed a button combination. I would yell because I’m emotionally invested in these characters and I know because of my incorrect button presses that character might be punished (in a fight, the other fighter might hit my character with a lamp, or run away).
It is really fun and engaging. Play through the demo, if you dig it… fantastic, pick it up. I would say the demo is a pretty good slice of what the game is. Check out the LINK to the trailer I added to the review.
I can’t wait to see what other type of product Quantum Games will put out with this existing architecture they created.
